Is current preventive and on-demand treatment

While available treatment for HAE has improved, people still have to consider how well it works as compared to how it is tolerated and how convenient it is to take*

Injections
  • May cause pain or a reaction at the injection site
  • Needles often cause anxiety
  • Can be difficult to carry
  • Can deter people from traveling far from home
  • When traveling, injections can be difficult to carry, often require more planning, and take up space
Infusions
  • May require travel to an infusion center
  • Some who self-administer may depend on relatives or caregivers for assistance
  • Can interfere with personal and work plans
Orals
  • Typically, not as effective as injections or infusions
  • May lead to stomach problems like pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and heartburn
  • Could cause side effects such as facial-hair growth and liver damage

*Individual experience may vary.

Despite recent advances, people with HAE are still having to make trade-offs with current treatment
